Most CRTs from the 1980s and 1990s were designed with separate chips inside:
-
A CPU/microcontroller (for menus, remote functions, tuning, etc.)
-
A video decoder (jungle chip), which handles composite video, luma, chroma, and sync.
Because the jungle chip is independent, this kit allows you to inject a clean RGBS signal directly into it, unlocking razor-sharp picture quality that composite and S-Video simply can’t deliver.
However, by the year 2000, many manufacturers started using “super ICs,” where the CPU and video decoder were combined into a single chip. These newer sets cannot be modded with this kit. That’s why this mod is designed only for CRTs made before 2000.
Rule of Thumb:
-
Two separate chips (CPU + jungle) = Moddable ✅
-
One super IC = Not moddable ❌
If you’re unsure, check your TV’s service manual or open the back and look at the board.
Alternatively, you can check the Sunthar’s moddable CRT list here.
