My Story – Bringing Sony PVM Monitors to Australia
If you’ve been following My Retro Game Hub for a while, you probably already know I have a bit of an obsession with retro gaming… especially Sony PVM (Professional Video Monitor).
For those who don’t know me, I’m the guy behind My Retro Game Hub and Aussie Sony PVM group on Facebook, an Australian retro gaming enthusiast focused on importing, testing, refurbishing, and helping preserve Sony PVM CRT monitors for retro gaming enthusiasts in Australia.
What started as a hobby and passion for retro gaming slowly turned into something much bigger.

Like many retro gamers, I grew up with classic consoles from the 80s and 90s. There’s just something special about playing retro games the way they were originally meant to be played — on a proper CRT display. That eventually led me deep down the rabbit hole of Sony PVM monitors, RGB gaming, scanlines, and all things CRT and retro gaming.
For those unfamiliar, Sony PVMs were originally used in hospitals, television broadcasting studios, and professional video production environments. Today, they’ve become highly sought after by retro gaming enthusiasts because classic consoles like the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), Super Nintendo (SNES), Sega Mega Drive/Genesis, PlayStation, Nintendo 64, and many others simply look incredible on them.
The sharp image quality, vibrant colours, beautiful scanlines, and low latency make Sony PVM CRT monitors one of the best ways to experience retro gaming.
Somewhere along the way, my little retro gaming obsession somehow turned into My Retro Game Hub and a community of fellow CRT nerds, collectors, modders, gamers, and nostalgic people who just love old-school gaming. I’ve met heaps of awesome people along the way, especially through the Aussie Sony PVM Facebook community, which I started back in July 2025.

I often get asked, “How do you actually import Sony PVM monitors into Australia?”
Honestly… it’s not as simple as buying a monitor online and hoping for the best.
Importing Sony PVM monitors into Australia is actually a long, expensive, and risky process.

I source my Sony PVM units from overseas suppliers, collectors, and industry contacts, slowly building stock over time because shipping only one or two CRT monitors simply isn’t financially viable. Since these monitors are fragile and often over 20 to 40 years old, every unit requires careful handling and proper protection.

Each monitor is individually packed, protected using custom-built crates and protective materials, consolidated at a logistics warehouse overseas, and eventually shipped through sea freight to Australia — a process that can often take months.

And even then, there’s always risk involved.
These are vintage CRT monitors after all. Not every Sony PVM survives shipping or arrives in perfect working condition.
Once shipments finally land in Australia, that’s when the real work begins.
Every Sony PVM monitor gets cleaned, tested, checked, calibrated, and refurbished where needed. Some units require minor repairs, some need recapping, while others serve as donor units for spare parts to help keep other Sony CRT monitors alive.

My goal has always been simple — to help preserve Sony PVM monitors in Australia and make them available for fellow retro gaming enthusiasts who want an authentic CRT gaming experience.
From sourcing and importing Sony PVMs, to testing, refurbishing, replying to messages and emails, running the website, managing socials, and tinkering with new retro gaming hardware projects (which I sometimes post in the Aussie Sony PVM group or on social media) — it all happens in my garage. At the end of the day, this whole thing is pretty much a one-man operation.

Over time, I’ve also learned that getting Sony PVMs safely to people is just as important as finding them in the first place. These old CRTs are heavy, fragile, and definitely not built for rough courier handling.
To help protect them during transit, I reuse the custom-built crates originally used to ship the monitors to Australia and always take extra care when packing and preparing each unit for its new home.
I ship units all across Australia, and it’s always awesome seeing these old CRTs go to fellow collectors, retro gamers, and people wanting to experience games the way they were meant to be played.

At the end of the day, I genuinely love this hobby and community. Seeing someone reconnect with childhood memories through a Sony PVM, helping someone build their dream retro gaming setup, or simply chatting CRTs with fellow enthusiasts honestly makes all the hard work worth it.
And I’ve still got plenty more ideas. There’ll be more upcoming Sony PVM projects, retro gaming accessories, CRT hardware concepts, and cool things planned for the future.
